Udawalawe National Park Overview
Udawalawe National Park has a history of conservation and natural heritage making it a very colorful wildlife sanctuary. The park was created in 1972 as a home to the animals that were displaced by the building of the Udawalawe Reservoir and is characterized by a variety of landscapes and a rich variety of wildlife such as expansive grasslands, thorny scrub jungles and the gleaming reservoir. There are open savannas, scenic waterways and golden sunset in the horizon. The main reservoir in the park is a very important source of water and this attracts herds of animals, and the surrounding location displays the natural beauty of the southern plains of Sri Lanka. Unlike busy cities, Udawalawe has relaxing viewing places and jeep tracks that remind of its ecological and conservation past.
